Fines and Provincial Offences

Oxford County Provincial Offences Administration is available for in-person visits during regular business hours. An appointment is not required for in-person visits. POA staff are also available to assist you by telephone or email. Please see contact information below.

Provincial offences matters during COVID-19

Provincial Offences Courts have resumed (early resolutions, trials, set date, adjournments, etc.). These matters are able to proceed only by Zoom (audio or video) appearance.  There will be no in-person court appearances until further notice.

If you have received a Summons to appear in Provincial Offences Court your matter will proceed via Zoom. There will be no in-person appearances unless authorized by a Justice of the Peace conducting the remote appearance. 

If you have a court date scheduled (i.e., Summons, Early Resolution, Trial):

  • Your matter will be scheduled for remote appearance by Zoom
  • Follow the call-in and/or connection directions on the notice that was provided to you
  • If you have not received an Early Resolution Notice, Notice of Trial or Notice of Rescheduled Court Date, contact the Provincial Offences Administration at poa@oxfordcounty.ca

About Provincial Offences Administration

Oxford County’s Provincial Offences Administration (POA) is responsible for accepting POA fine payments, enforcing defaulted fines, scheduling trials and early resolution meetings, and final transcript preparation.

Paying your fine

To pay a fine you must do one of the following within the designated time period identified to you.

Ticket Options

If you received an Offence Notice (ticket), you have 15 days from the offence date to exercise one of the options set out on the back of the Notice. If you do not respond within 15 days, you may be deemed not to dispute the charge a conviction may be entered for the offence. Upon conviction, additional costs will be added to the total payable.

If the fine goes into default, an administrative fee will be added and steps will be taken to enforce the defaulted fine. For example, information may be provided to a consumer reporting agency and for certain offences, including speeding, your driver’s licence may be suspended.

Given the continued operational impacts of COVID-19 to court operations, the Ontario Court of Justice recognizes the need to rely on remote court options for parties and participants in POA proceedings to ensure access to justice is maintained. In recognition of this need, the Court is taking a number of steps to direct scheduling in a manner that supports remote hearings and encourages effective use of the limited capacity of in-person proceedings.

Oxford County Provincial Offences Court has expanded the use of technology in the courtroom by scheduling matters, by remote appearance. The Oxford County Provincial Offences Court uses Zoom for remote appearances. The use of Zoom allows defendants to appear by video or audio on their scheduled appearance date. See information at top of page on how to attend a Zoom appearance.

You should be dressed cleanly and neatly for your court appearance.

The following rules of decorum apply in the court, including remote appearance/ZOOM Court:

  • No hats, sunglasses are allowed to be worn in the courtroom
  • Gum, food and drinks are not allowed in the courtroom
  • Cell phones and audio and video recording devices must be turned OFF
  • No clothing/backgrounds with slanderous/political comments
  • Refrain from bringing small children to court
  • Address the Justice of the Peace as “Your Worship”

If you plan on requesting a trial or an early resolution, you have the right to request disclosure in the case. Disclosure is a copy of the evidence that has been collected to prosecute your case. It is given to you as it is your constitutional right to know the evidence that will be used against you.

The prosecutor’s office will provide disclosure, which may include a copy of the officer’s notes, witness statements, and/or accident reports if they are applicable to your charge.

To request disclosure, email disclosure@oxfordcounty.ca. You must include your offence number, your full name and the date you are to appear for Early Resolution or Trial. Please allow 30 days for your disclosure request to be processed. If your court date is less than 30 days from the date of your request for disclosure you are not guaranteed to receive disclosure prior to your appearance date.

Under no circumstance will the Prosecutor or any Provincial Offences employee give you legal advice about the rules of the court, conduct of your case, the probability of your success, or the consequences of conviction.

It is recommended that you obtain your own legal representation or advice. There is no free Duty Counsel for Provincial Offences.
